SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

The Vermont State Police is investigating the death of a man whose body was found on Camels Hump in Duxbury on Wednesday morning, Oct. 28, 2026. The investigation began at about 11:35 a.m. when two hikers called police to report locating a man’s body about 1.5 miles up the Forest City Trail from the parking area in Huntington. Multiple agencies responded to the scene. First responders hiked to the location and found the body of a man, later identified as Jason April, 50, of Denver, Colorado. Crews recovered the body from the mountain and transported him to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. There are no indications at this stage of the investigation that the death is suspicious.

The response to Camels Hump involved members of the Vermont State Police, Huntington Rescue, Richmond Rescue, Waterbury Backcountry Rescue, and game wardens from the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife. The trail was closed for much of the afternoon while the recovery operation was underway. It has since reopened.
